A fire that apparently began in an ice cream shop in Seaside Park on Thursday afternoon and swiftly consumed several blocks of the boardwalk that connects the Shore town and neighboring Seaside Heights.

More than 400 firefighters worked for hours to control the massive blaze, which started at a Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard stand around 2:15 p.m. and went on to ravage more than 80% of the Seaside Park boardwalk

Dozens of businesses were destroyed in the fire, Christie said. Officials earlier noted that other structures were damaged when winds carried embers from the ice cream shop where they believe the fire started up the boardwalk to a nearby condominium complex, pier and an arcade, city and county officials said. Those later blazes were contained.
